Kings are second largest of all penguins, length: 85 - 95 cm (up to 37 inches) females being generally smaller than males. Breeds  twice every three years, a single egg is incubated by being held on their feet for 55 days with males and females undertaking shifts. They take up to a year to raise one chick. Different stages of their breeding cycle may be found at the same time in a rookery. They feed on small fish and some squid taken by pursuit diving.

A resident on the Falklands. They prefer flat coastal greens, near to shore. Most of the Falkland's population is at Volunteer Point but there are small populations at several other locations, Saunders Island being one of them.

Circumpolar on sub- Antarctic islands and low Antarctic islands. There are huge colonies on South Georgia.
